Press Conference- My Right To Play

Dear Friends,

AMMA Foundation and the All Malaysia Malayalee Association (AMMA) held its inaugural National-level Futsal Tournament, “Piala Datuk Mike Krishnan Futsal Tournament” on Saturday 16th August 2014 at Sports Planet Subang Grand, in memory of the late Datuk Mike Krishnan, a former Director of AMMA Foundation.

In view of the overwhelming support and enquiries from the general public, the Board took a decision to run a spin-off and introduce a new concept, inviting underprivileged children from various orphanages. Working with Revosport Asia, a local sports marketing company, the Board launched a new CSR initiative called “My Right to Play”.

A Press Conference on the “My Right to Play” (MRTP) initiative, was held on 20 August 2015 at Royal Selangor Club, Bt Kiara (Kiara Room).

The organisers  appointed Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran as the Patron of Piala Datuk Mike Futsal Tournament. Tunku Imran is a member of the International Olympic and is also the Patron of the World Squash Federation and is currently the President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

The key people behind this project are :

a. Datuk Suseela Menon, the President of the All Malaysia Malayalee Association

b. AMMA Foundation President, Mr. Girish Ramachandran

c. Mr. Glen Stidolph.  the Chief Operating Officer and Founder of Revosport Asia,  a sports marketing company

d. Mr. Dinesh Nair the Chairman of AMMA’s Youth Wing and also the Organising Chairman

AMMA Foundation established the Right to Learn project in 2007. This gives under-privileged children an opportunity to better themselves in their school work and in various other  ways. To complement this project, the "My Right to Play" programme was initiated. Children learn best through play-based activities. Sports needs spirit, dedication and perserverance, qualities that many of the children we reach out to require just to attend school. ‘My Right to Play’ will work with sports federations, clubs and sports personalites to help instil these values while learning new skills. In fact, “My Right to Play” is already receiving recognition and endorsement amongst some of the world’s prominent sports bodies and personalities.

The first sport and event under this programme will be Futsal, with other sports in the pipeline in the years to come.

In his address, YAM Tunku Imran expressed his admiration for the late Datuk Mike Krishnan, and thanked both AMMA and AMMA Foundation for having not only mooted the idea of paying tribute to a great man, but also for tying in the Datuk Mike Krishnan Futsal Trophy with a number of charitable causes.

My Right to Play will select children aged 12 to 14, from up to 16 orphanages in the Klang Valley, to take part in futsal competitions. Friends United, a professional training academy, has very kindly agreed to provide free training for the children. They will be equipped with the full kits required, such as gear, boots and such, to participate effectively in the tournament. The games will be played on the same day as the Piala Datuk Mike Krishnan Futsal Tournament on Saturday 24th Oct 2015 at the Sports Planet Subang Grand. The Right to Play finals will be held on a suitably glamorous platform, on a date and event to be announced later.  The idea is to give these under-privileged participants the opportunity to shine in a proper, well-attended and well-publicised environment.

Although this year the Programme is focusing on Futsal we have plans to expand the MRTP next year to golf as well.

My Right To Play Programme is targeting to fund expenses of up to RM400,000 annually and is looking for large corporate donors and sponsors to assist. Full accountability will be provided at a stages.

Girish Ramachandran,
President
AMMA Foundation
